Plant hire with operator, often called wet hire, means the machine arrives with a trained operator and usually fuel, so you pay for productive hours rather than managing the machine yourself. PlantHiring.co.za is a free quote service. You fill in one form and we pass it to independent hire companies near your site, who quote directly. We do not hire, operate or transport any plant ourselves, and there is no fee or obligation. Tell us the machine, the job and the expected hours.
Wet hire versus dry hire
Dry hire is the machine only: you supply a competent operator, fuel and daily checks. Wet hire bundles these in. Each suits a different client:
- Wet hire suits homeowners, once-off jobs and contractors without their own operators
- Dry hire suits contractors with skilled, certified operators and fuel on site
- Long-term hires are sometimes a mix, with the operator supplied but fuel billed at cost
Most TLB hire, excavator hire and crane hire for small sites in South Africa is on wet rates, because few clients have operators on the payroll.
Operator competency and the law
The OHS Act and the Construction Regulations 2014 require that construction vehicles and mobile plant are run only by trained, competent operators. In practice, ask the supplier to confirm:
- A valid operator certificate or competency card for the exact machine class
- A current medical fitness certificate
- For mobile cranes and forklifts, training that meets the Driven Machinery Regulations 2015
- For plant hire with driver on public roads, the correct licence code and a PrDP for trucks and tippers
Forklift hire and driver packages are common in warehouses where staff are not certified. Keep copies of the cards in your site safety file.
What a plant hire with operator rate covers
A wet hire rate is normally per hour with a minimum number of hours per day, or a fixed daily rate. Check what each quote includes:
- The operator's wages for normal hours, with overtime rules for long days and weekends
- Fuel, or a fuel clause billed on actual use
- Float charges to deliver and collect the machine, charged each way
- Standing time if the machine waits on you, often at a reduced rate
- Operator accommodation and travel on far-off sites
Rain is the usual cause of standing time: inland summer thunderstorms and Cape winter rain can stop earthworks for days. Agree in writing how weather days are billed. Our plant hire rates page explains the rest.
Getting the most from a hired operator
Have the site marked, services located and the tipping point arranged before the machine arrives. Give the operator one person to take instructions from. Sign the daily time sheet each evening so hours are agreed while they are fresh. Allow time for the operator's daily pre-use checks and greasing, and make sure there is safe parking for the machine overnight, ideally inside a locked yard. On a tipper truck job, keep enough trucks coming so the machine never sits idle.
What to include in your request
- Name the machine and size you need
- Describe the job and expected hours
