Front end loader hire gives you a wheeled machine with a large front bucket for loading trucks, building and working stockpiles, and moving bulk material across a site. PlantHiring.co.za is a free quote service. You fill in one form and we pass it to independent plant hire companies near your site, who quote you directly. We do not hire, operate or transport any machine ourselves, and there is no fee or obligation. Tell us the material, the volumes and how long you need the loader.

What front end loader hire is used for

A front end loader has no digging arm. Its job is to scoop, carry and load, and it does that faster than any other machine on site. Typical work includes:

  • Loading tipper trucks from stockpiles of sand, stone or soil
  • Building, turning and cleaning stockpiles at quarries, crushers and sand mines
  • Feeding mobile crushers and screens
  • Moving bulk fill on large earthworks and road projects
  • Clearing spillage, rubble and storm debris

For bulk digging into undisturbed ground, an excavator loads trucks better, while a loader shines on loose material that has already been dug, blasted or crushed.

Wheel loader hire sizes and buckets

Wheel loader hire is usually described by bucket size rather than weight. Compact loaders carry around one cubic metre or less and suit yards and farms. Medium loaders of roughly 1.5 to 3 cubic metres handle most construction work. Large loaders of 3 to 5 cubic metres and above work in quarries and mines, where output per hour matters.

Ask about the bucket type. A general bucket suits sand and soil, a rock bucket with teeth suits blasted material, and a high-tip bucket helps with tall trucks. Some loaders take pallet forks. Tyres are a big cost in rocky ground, so suppliers may adjust their rates for quarry work.

Front end loader hire costs and transport

Loader hire is priced per hour with a minimum of several hours, or monthly against a guaranteed number of hours, usually with an operator. The total depends on:

  • Bucket size and machine class
  • Hours per day and the length of hire
  • Lowbed transport each way, as larger loaders are not normally driven far on public roads
  • Fuel, tyre wear in abrasive material, and standing time
  • VAT, deposits and damage waiver

A longer hire usually brings a lower hourly rate, so share your full programme in the request.

Long-term loader hire on mines and quarries

Many loaders work on mines and quarries for months at a time. Mining sites fall under mining health and safety law, not only the OHS Act, and run their own inductions, medicals and operator competency checks, so give the supplier time to prepare paperwork before the machine arrives. Ask about breakdown cover and whether a standby unit is available. On large stockpile and haul jobs, a dozer often works alongside the loader, and on smaller sites a bobcat may be enough.

What to include in your request

  • Describe the material and daily volumes
  • Give the bucket size you need if known
  • Say whether trucks are already arranged
  • Mention mine or quarry site requirements
  • State the hire period and hours per day

Frequently asked questions

Does PlantHiring.co.za hire out front end loaders?
No. PlantHiring.co.za is a free quote service only and does not own, hire, operate or transport loaders. We send your request to independent plant hire companies near your site, who quote you directly. You pay us nothing and can accept any quote or none.
What is the difference between a front end loader and a TLB?
A TLB has a loader bucket on the front and a backhoe for digging at the back, so it does both jobs on smaller sites. A front end loader is larger, has no backhoe and moves much more material per bucket when loading trucks.
Can I get a loader for one day?
Yes, many companies hire loaders by the hour or day, but the minimum charge and lowbed transport each way make very short hires expensive. If your work allows, group the loading into fewer days so the machine works steadily while on site.
Is an operator included?
Usually. Most front end loaders are hired wet, with an experienced operator, because the machines are large and costly to repair. Dry hire is sometimes possible for long-term clients with their own certified operators, but expect stricter terms and a bigger deposit.
