Compactor hire is how most builders, paving teams and plumbers get hand-guided compaction equipment for a day or a week without buying it. PlantHiring.co.za is a free quote service. You fill in one form and we pass your request to independent hire companies near you, who quote you directly. We do not hire, sell or deliver anything ourselves. Tell us what you are compacting, the area or trench length, and when you need the machine, and local suppliers will respond with prices.

Plate compactor hire or rammer hire?

Choose the machine by the material and the space:

  • Plate compactor hire suits sand, gravel and crusher run under paving, slabs and driveways, and for bedding paving blocks
  • Reversible plates are heavier and can move forwards and backwards, which helps in confined areas and on thicker layers
  • Rammer hire (a jumping jack) suits trench backfill, clay soils and narrow spaces around pipes and foundations

For large areas such as estate roads and parking lots, a ride-on roller works much faster than any hand machine.

Plate compactor hire price: what you pay for

A plate compactor hire price is usually a daily rate, with cheaper weekend or weekly rates at many branches. The total depends on:

  • The machine weight and whether it is forward-only or reversible
  • Hire period, often with a one-day minimum
  • Fuel, as most units run on petrol or diesel and go out full
  • A deposit, especially for cash customers without an account
  • Delivery, if you cannot collect it on a bakkie or trailer
  • Paving pads, damage waiver and VAT

Many hirers stock compactors with other tool hire items, so you can add a cutter or a jackhammer to the same order.

Getting good compaction

Compact in thin layers, typically no thicker than the machine is designed for, and make several passes over each layer. Material must be damp but not wet: too dry and it will not bind, too wet and it pumps and goes soft. During summer thunderstorms inland or Cape winter rain, cover stockpiles so the material does not become saturated. If an engineer has specified a density, arrange testing before the slab or paving goes down.

Safety with hand compactors

Plates and rammers are heavy, noisy and vibrate hard. Wear hearing protection, safety boots and gloves, and limit the time each person spends on the machine to reduce hand-arm vibration. Never run a petrol unit in a closed trench or room, as exhaust fumes collect quickly. Keep the plate away from unsupported trench edges, and lift the machine with two people or a lifting point, not by the handle alone. Ask the branch for a quick demonstration when you collect it, especially if you have not used a reversible plate before.

What to include in your request

  • Say what you are compacting and the area
  • Give trench depth and width if backfilling
  • Note whether you can collect it yourself
  • State how many days you need it

  • Factories, warehouses and logistics parks: compacting backfill around machine bases, drains and footings inside a factory or warehouse
  • Roads, pipelines and civil works: compacting trench backfill, kerb bedding and sidewalk paving along municipal road works
  • Mines and quarries: compacting fill around plant footings, cable trenches and small pads at a mine or process plant

Frequently asked questions

Does PlantHiring.co.za hire out compactors?
No. PlantHiring.co.za is a free quote service and does not stock or hire out any compactors. We send your details to independent hire companies in your area. They quote you directly on their own terms, and you decide which quote to accept.
Can I collect a plate compactor in my bakkie?
Usually yes. Most forward plates and rammers fit in a bakkie and can be loaded by two people or with a ramp. Heavier reversible plates may need a trailer or delivery. Ask the hire branch about the machine's weight and whether they help with loading.
Which compactor is best for paving?
A forward plate compactor is the usual choice for bedding sand and for vibrating paving blocks into place once laid. Fit a rubber or polyurethane paving pad to avoid chipping the blocks. Use a rammer only in narrow strips and around edges where a plate cannot reach.
How long should I hire a compactor for?
For a single driveway or patio, a day or weekend is often enough. For trenches or larger projects, weekly hire usually works out cheaper per day. Have the material on site and levelled before collecting the machine, so you are not paying for it to stand idle.
