Concrete mixer hire lets you batch concrete, mortar and plaster on site for footings, slabs, paving and brickwork without buying a machine. PlantHiring.co.za is a free quote service: you fill in one form and we forward your request to independent hire companies near your site, who quote you directly. We do not hire, sell or deliver any equipment ourselves. Tell us roughly how much concrete you need, the power available and your dates, and local suppliers will price a suitable mixer.

Types of concrete mixer for hire

Site mixers are rated by drum size, and the useful batch is smaller than the drum:

  • Small electric mixers for plaster, mortar and small concrete jobs at home
  • Petrol or diesel drum mixers for sites without a reliable power supply
  • Tow-behind diesel mixers with larger drums for footings and slabs
  • Self-loading mixers on larger civil and farm projects, usually with an operator

If there is no mains power, add a generator to an electric mixer or choose an engine-driven unit.

Cement mixer hire or ready-mix?

Cement mixer hire makes sense for small or spread-out pours, for work over several days, and where a ready-mix truck cannot reach. For a large slab poured in one go, ready-mix delivered by truck is usually faster and gives more consistent strength. Many builders use both: ready-mix for the main slab and a hired mixer for footings, steps, plaster and patching. Ask your engineer what strength the concrete must reach and mix to that specification, not by eye. Hot, windy weather in the Lowveld or Karoo dries concrete quickly, so plan pours for the cooler part of the day and keep the surface moist while it cures.

What affects concrete mixer hire cost

Mixer hire is usually charged per day or week. Quotes vary with:

  • Drum size and whether it is electric, petrol or diesel
  • The hire period and any minimum charge
  • Delivery and collection, or collection on your own bakkie or trailer
  • A deposit and cleaning charges if the drum comes back with set concrete
  • Damage waiver and VAT

Combining the mixer with a compactor and other tool hire items on one order can save on transport.

Using a hired mixer safely

Keep hands, shovels and loose clothing out of the turning drum, and never reach in while it runs. Electric mixers need a proper earth leakage-protected supply and undamaged cables. Wear gloves and eye protection, as wet cement causes skin burns. Wash out the drum at the end of each day and before returning it, because hardened concrete inside is the most common reason for extra charges. Set the mixer on firm, level ground close to the materials and the pour, so the crew does not push heavy wheelbarrows across the site all day.

What to include in your request

  • Give the concrete volume in m³
  • Say whether mains power is available
  • Note the hire dates and period
  • State if you can collect it yourself

Frequently asked questions

Does PlantHiring.co.za hire out concrete mixers?
No. PlantHiring.co.za is a free quote service and does not hire out or deliver mixers. We send your request to independent hire companies near your site, who quote you directly with their own prices and terms. You choose whether to go ahead.
What size concrete mixer do I need?
For plaster, mortar and small repairs, a small electric mixer is usually enough. For footings and a house slab done in batches, a larger diesel or tow-behind mixer saves time. Give suppliers the approximate volume in cubic metres and your crew size so they can recommend a size.
Can I use a hired mixer during load shedding?
An electric mixer stops when the power goes, which can ruin a batch mid-pour. If outages are likely, hire a petrol or diesel mixer, or add a generator sized for the mixer's motor. Check the outage schedule before planning a pour.
Do I have to clean the mixer before returning it?
Yes. Most hire companies expect the drum to come back free of concrete and will charge for cleaning or for a drum that needs chipping out. Rinse it with water and a little stone at the end of each day while the concrete is still soft.
