Plant hire companies by area

Find TLB, excavator, tipper truck, crane, generator and tool hire in Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, the Western Cape and every other province.

Hire companies on our network work in all nine provinces, from Highveld clay to coastal sand and Karoo rock. Choose your province or town to read about local ground, weather and access, and request a quote.

Gauteng

Plant hire in Gauteng hardly slows down. TLBs dig services and footings for housing estates on every edge of the metros, while excavators, graders and rollers build warehouse platforms, widen roads and reclaim old mine dumps. The ground changes quickly: Highveld clay and shale in the south and east, granite with hard corestones around northern Johannesburg, and dolomite on the West Rand and in Centurion, where geotechnical checks and strict water control come before any digging. Thunderstorms between October and March turn open trenches into ponds, so a pump is worth adding. Heavy traffic on the N1, N3 and R21 makes float timing as important as the machine rate.

Mpumalanga

Coal, power and timber set the pace for earthmoving in Mpumalanga. On the Highveld, excavators, dozers, articulated dump trucks and water bowsers support open-cast mining, rehabilitation and haul-road upkeep, while TLBs and tippers handle housing and municipal services in eMalahleni, Middelburg and Secunda. Karoo sandstone and shale weather to clay over dolerite sills, so a breaker often joins the hire when footings hit hard rock. Below the escarpment, the Lowveld around Mbombela brings granite hills, citrus and macadamia farms and steep plots. Summer storms from October to March soften haul roads within hours, and floating machines along the tolled N4 or busy coal routes adds real cost.

North West

Mining on the platinum belt around Rustenburg and Brits keeps excavators, dump trucks, graders and water carts busy, while farming towns further west hire TLBs for dams, feedlots and pipelines. The eastern side sits on Bushveld norite that weathers to black turf, a heaving clay that has to be dug out deep and replaced before slabs or roads go down. Around Potchefstroom and parts of Klerksdorp, dolomite calls for geotechnical sign-off and careful stormwater control. Most rain falls in short, heavy storms between October and March, leaving black turf unworkable for days. Towns are far apart, so check whether a quote includes the float to site and back.

Limpopo

Work in Limpopo is spread over enormous distances, from coal and platinum mining in the Waterberg and around Mokopane to irrigation farms along the rivers and steady housing growth in Polokwane and Thohoyandou. Ground swings between deep sandy soils, granite outcrops that call for a breaker or a heavier excavator, and pockets of black clay that must be removed before building. Rain comes as heavy thunderstorms from October to March, flooding gravel access roads and low-water bridges, while the dry winter brings dust that a water cart keeps down. Haulage is the hidden cost: a float from Polokwane to a remote farm or mine can take a full day.

Northern Cape

Distance shapes every plant hire job in the Northern Cape. Iron ore and manganese mines near Kathu and Hotazel, solar parks around Upington and De Aar, and irrigation along the Orange River all need excavators, graders, rollers, dozers and water bowsers, while towns hire TLBs for services and low-cost housing. Kalahari sand over hard calcrete is typical, so tracked machines cope with the loose surface and a ripper or breaker handles the layer beneath. What little rain falls usually arrives in late-summer storms between January and April, sometimes washing out gravel roads. With long empty highways between towns, float charges and standing time can outweigh the daily hire rate.

Free State

Free State plant hire divides between farming, the Goldfields and steady municipal work. Grain and livestock farms hire excavators and TLBs for dams, contour banks, drainage and fencing lines, while Bloemfontein, Welkom and Sasolburg add industrial yards, housing and road repairs. Most of the province lies on Karoo mudstone and shale that weathers to expansive clay, so foundation trenches go deeper and backfill is rolled in thin layers. Dolerite ridges can stop a small TLB dead, which is when a breaker earns its place. Storms between November and March may close farm roads for days. The N1 and N3 make moving machines between towns easy, though distances still add up.

KwaZulu-Natal

Ports, logistics and steep hillsides drive plant hire in KwaZulu-Natal. Excavators and dump trucks build container yards and warehouse platforms near Durban and Richards Bay, while TLBs, rollers and plate compactors work on North Coast estates, sugar cane roads and municipal services inland. Coastal sites often sit on loose sand with a high water table, making dewatering pumps and tracked machines standard, whereas the inland hills bring shale, sandstone and dolerite that may need a breaker. The wet season runs from October to March, and slips on cut slopes are a genuine risk. The tolled N2 and N3 corridors and long climbs inland make float planning important.

Eastern Cape

Car plants, two busy ports and a huge rural road network define plant hire in the Eastern Cape. Excavators, graders and rollers build industrial platforms around Coega and Kariega and work on harbour and logistics projects in Gqeberha and East London, while gravel road maintenance across the former Transkei keeps graders and water carts busy. TLBs dig services for schools, clinics and housing in smaller towns. Ground ranges from coastal sand and calcrete to Karoo mudstone and dolerite inland, with steep, eroded slopes in the east. Summer storms dominate east of the Kei, and the Algoa coast gets rain year-round. Single-lane routes and passes push up float costs.

Western Cape

In the Western Cape, earthworks follow winter rain rather than summer storms. Bulk earthworks for housing estates, warehouse parks and road upgrades are often pushed into the dry months, because the Cape Flats water table rises and Malmesbury clay turns sticky between May and August. Tracked excavators and dewatering pumps suit the sandy flats, while granite and Table Mountain sandstone on the slopes call for a breaker attachment. Vineyards and orchards across the Boland hire excavators for dams, trenching and land preparation, and Saldanha adds port and industrial work. N1 and N2 traffic sets delivery windows, and the Huguenot Tunnel toll applies to floats heading inland.
